It’s been quite a year (well, year and a month) for my new Xi Force series. The first book, Z-Bot premiered on Dec. 6th of 2017. The story was inspired by a picture I picked up on a stock photo site:
It spoke to me in ways I hadn’t experienced before. I needed to know who this person was. I needed to figure out his story. And thus, Chris Johnson, Z-Bot, was born.
I was really excited that my cover artist could use the inspirational picture on the cover of the book because this was Chris.
Now, I have a history of killing off the heroes (and occasionally my heroines as well) in my stores. In science fiction and fantasy death doesn’t have to be so final. But with this book I toyed with the idea of killing off my hero in the first chapter. I ended up killing him off in the first sentence of the book.
Beep. Beep. Beeeeeee . . .
Yup, that’s Chris’s final heartbeat, at least for a while.
You see, Chris becomes a zombiebot. Something half robot, something raised from the dead. A Frankenstein-like project spearheaded by brainy love-interest, Dr. Heather Logan.
And this paves the way for Chris to become the Earth’s (at least my Earth’s) first superhero, and the first member of a new superhero team:
Xi Force
Z-Bot went on to win the Kathryn Hayes “When Sparks Fly” contest. The book also was a finalist for the 2018 PRISM Award, the 2018 National Excellence in Romance Fiction Award (NERFA), and the 2018 Toronto Northern Hearts Contest.
Not bad for a poor little cyborg from Megopolis.
