The severed chapter – Severed once again

I am beginning the redesign/reboot of this blog and my first act was to get rid of the severed chapter section. In the following weeks I will be also deleting Purple Passion and A Passion for Painting. I have decided to abandon the Passion for Painting project as I have been pulled into a new writing project that is absorbing a lot of my time right now and could mark a new direction in my career. I’ll give you some more details as the project unfolds. It’s something I’m very excited about.

Until next time…

Getting Schooled

I just spent a wonderful week at the Rhinelander School of the Arts. I took classes in plotting and voice with author Christine DeSmet and a dialogue class with playwright Gail Sterkel. Both were incredible instructors and I learned a lot, but the most important thing I learned was that my completed novel, Son of Thunder, is far from complete.

The people in the classes with me were tremendous as we lovingly tore apart each others writing to make it stronger, bolder and just over-all better. (rule of 3’s) I have to say that I’ve never felt so pumped up about my writing.

Next week I’m off to Gencon where I’ll be attending some writers symposiums, doing some gaming, and participating in a Zombie Walk. But as soon as I get back I plan on digging back into Son of Thunder, tearing it apart and building it back up using the tools I learned this past week.

A big THANK YOU goes out to my instructors and classmates for a great week.

My Passion for Painting project will continue, but you probably won’t be getting the next chapter for a few weeks yet. There’s so much to do, but I’m revitalized and very excited about my writing.

Until next time,

So I finally read through all of A Passion for Painting that I have already written and realize that there is a lot less there than I thought, and it made me realize that I have this problem. I write a lot in my head, but I don’t always get it down on paper. Like so many of my uncompleted projects, while I was working on it I envisioned scenes in my head but never got around to writing them.

Anyway, chapter 3 will be up shortly, but chapter 4 is a bit of a hot mess, and by hot I mean hot. It’s the first sex scene of the book, and that part is written. I just left out most of the build up to it, and there’s a lot. I mean these two just met and I threw them right into the sack. So I have my work cut out for me and, as this is a side project, it may be a while before chapter 4 gets posted.

Speaking of side projects, I had a friend challenge me to a writing contest, and I’ve picked up the gauntlet to enter the next quarter Writers of the Future contest with a short story called Naphtoe’s Protector. It’s a story I started a while ago while creating some characters for a Dungeons and Dragons adventure with some friends and I think it will also, at some point, be the opening chapter of a book I want to write. In any case, once again, most of the story was in my head, but now it’s down on paper (well in the computer).

So much writing to do, and I’m finding it harder to write in the summer than when there’s snow on the ground. Oh well, autumn is coming…

Chapter 2

I just put up chapter 2 of A Passion for Painting. I hope you enjoy it.

Today I turn 56 years old. I can’t help feeling that I’m at a pivotal point in my life. Almost a year into retirement, my writing still hasn’t taken off, but I’ve embraced a different lifestyle, one I think will lead to success. My body of work continues to grow. I currently have completed two short stories, two novellas and one novel. I have more stories started than I will probably ever finish, and new ideas continue to pop into my head. I look out my window and see rain clouds today, but in here it’s sunny and bright.

Until next time,
