Kindle Vella – A new way to read.

Kindle Vella has launched for readers!

Kindle Vella

Yes, Kindle Vella, Amazon’s newest publishing platform has launched for readers. For months now Amazon has been after us authors to post new content in preparation for this day. How well will it be received, time will tell.

It’s serialized stories with the first three episodes free, after that you pay by the episode with tokens, and Amazon is giving away 200 free tokens right now in the app to get you started, so don’t wait.

You can find Vella in your current Kindle device or app, or at: https://www.amazon.com/kindle-vella

And the opening of Kindle Vella means that my latest story is also available (Well at least the first 15 chapters…excuse me, episodes). Presenting: Destiny: Cloud Fist.

This is a story I’ve been writing off and on for years, and I’m excited to make it available on Amazon’s latest platform exclusively…for now. There will be regular episodes added, I’m planning on one or two per week depending on demand.

You can find the story by searching for S. C. Mitchell in the Kindle app or by going online here: https://www.amazon.com/kindle-vella/product/B095XKSZ6Q

Remember, you can read the first three episodes for free, so what are you waiting for?

And you can give reviews, so let me know how I’m doing.

Have a great day,

Steve

If you’re starting your blog hop here, or just hopping over from A. S. Fenichel’s blog,  welcome.

Today’s topic comes from the wonderful Jenna Da Sie – What do you do when writer’s block hits? Share some tips for our fellow writers.

What I’ve found when I hit writer’s block is that it is usually when I’m trying to get my characters to do something they don’t want to do. It’s crazy, I know, to think that just because I’m the author here, that I get any say over what my characters do. I come up with this wonderful scene and they balk, sit down stubbornly, and don’t let me continue with the story.

Okay, I get it. Back up, delete a scene or two, and let them start telling the story the way they want to. It’s usually just a matter of where I back up to before the story starts flowing again. And sometimes I really have to think on it a few days, where I get no writing done at all.

My new approach is to write two books at the same time, going back and forth between them. That way if I get blocked on one, I can continue writing on the other while my characters get their collective shit together. Currently I have Hearts in Orbit 4 and Heavenly Wars 3 on deck to write, and both are coming along nicely. But I know a block is coming one day. This time, I’ll be ready for it.

I hope.

So, how does Leslie Hachtel deal with her writer’s block? Find out as the Romance Writers Weekly blog hop continues at: http://lesliehachtelwriter.wordpress.com/…

If you’re starting your blog hop here, or just hopping over from Carrie Elks’ blog welcome.

Carrie also offers up today’s topic: The new fall TV schedule is here – what are you watching and why do you love it so much? Does what you watch influence your writing?

I’m not much of a television watcher any more. Three years ago my wife and I gave up cable and switched to watching our favorites a bit delayed on Hulu and Netflix.

That said, I do have some favorites in the new fall season.

I’m stoked about season 4 of marvel’s Agents of Shield.

Yeah. Ghost Rider. Nuff said!

I’m also watching the new Luke Cage series right now.

If you think I’m focusing in on superheroes, you’re right. I have a new series of superhero romances on the front burner right now, and I’m soaking in the genre. With comic books I feel like I’m getting back to my roots, and this new series is coming along nicely. Book one is done and (almost) sold. I’m hip deep in book 2 right now, with book 3 on the storyboard. It’s going to be fun.

Here’s a little peek at my Inspiration board for book 1:

His name is Z-Bot, hopefully coming to print sometime next year.

Oh, I’m also watching The Voice, Project Runway, and Lucifer.

If you’re starting your blog hop here, or just hopping over from Jenna Da Sie’s wonderful blog, welcome.

Today my good friend Marc Stevens offers up a writing challenge – Flash Fiction Challenge: Planes, trains, and automobiles (or even boats) give us a quick scene set on/in a moving vehicle.

Fun stuff, and I’ve been playing around with a couple of new characters for a future novel, so here’s a quick peek at them.

Stranger on a train.

Brakes squealing, the dingy subway car lurched to a halt. Doors slid open and grumbling commuters shuffled out.

A seat opened up across from the doors and Katherine slid into it. She let out an exhausted sigh, but let the soft smile linger on her lips. She’d had that dream again, waking her in the middle of the night. This time he’d taken her farther, almost to the point of . . .

Around her, voices stilled.

A lone figure stood in the train car’s doorway. The kind of man that attracted attention in any crowd. A man of mystery, dressed formally but with a dark blue cape on his shoulders, like something out of the past, or the future.

Light from behind cast the form in shadow, but familiarity sent tingles creeping up Katherine’s spine.

It couldn’t be.

As the man crossed into the train, the interior lighting illuminated his features.

Raven haired, a scruffy five-O’clock-shadow darkening his granite jaw, the man scanned the car. Dark, sullen eyes, the kind that burned into your soul, were suddenly directed at her. Eyebrows arched. “Katherine?”

The doors swished close behind him, the train lurched back into motion, as their eyes locked. Trapped in his gaze, her heart thundered in her ears as moments turned into centuries. Then his gaze wavered, dropping to the floor as his cheeks reddened.

Katherine steeled herself. “Damien?”

Her core clenched. Gooseflesh crept up her arms. She’d never met him. Yet, she knew him.

His name, his visage, and his touch were oh so familiar to her. Every night for the past two weeks he’d haunted her dreams, stripping her bare, kissing her crazy, and taking her farther and farther every night toward an inevitable climax. Each night closer, but never there.

He stepped nearer, took the seat next to hers, then gently took her hand. “I thought, maybe, it was time we met.”

What do you think? Want to know more about these two? I have a new series percolating that I think they’d fit into perfectly. We will see.

Today’s topic comes from the wonderful Fiona Riplee – I’m curious what everyone is working on. Write about a new work in progress, new idea, or some characters that just won’t leave you alone.

Right now I’m in edits on Between Venus and Mars, a fun Science Fiction Romantic Comedy scheduled for release next year from Soul Mate publishing as part of their Soul Mate Tree flagship project. I’m very excited about this book and this project.

The Soul Mate Tree
Between Venus and Mars

Once Upon a Galaxy . . .

Zana Starchild is on a mission to restore her tribe’s livestock and save herself from one more meal of kelp. Sure, it’s technically illegal to visit Old Earth, but to a rim rat like Zana, galactic laws are really just guidelines. Her wrecked starship just means she’ll need to use her backup plan to get off the abandoned world, an old Earth legend her uncle passed down to her.

Pulled from a relaxing shower, across the galaxy to Old Earth, Galactic Marshall Kyle Kepler finds himself naked and marooned with a quirky rim rat. Zana’s broken more laws than Kyle can count, and he plans to arrest her, just as soon as he can find transport off the planet and a pair of pants.

A junk heap of a starship, a magical tree, and a roving gang of mutant kangaroos are just the beginning of rollicking intergalactic journey filled with laughs, love, and adventure.

Festive Stocking Filled with Candycanes and Gingerbread Man

Today’ s challenge comes from Xio Axelrod who wants us to “Pitch your WIP or latest release to us in 140 characters or less.”

Wow, talk about concise. Describe a whole novel in just a few words.
But it is a growing trend from Publishers and their editors. They’re using Twitter more and more to take book pitches, so it’s a good skill set for an author to develop. I’ve never done this before, but I’m up for the challenge.

I’m currently working on the sequel to Son of Thunder entitled Daughter of Darkness.

Sexy couple. Young man with his girlfriend posing togetherHere’s the back cover blurb (still a work in progress):

It wouldn’t be the first time I’d been kicked out of heaven.

After a thousand years in exile, the goddess Nott had learned to live without interaction with the other Norse Gods. Hidden away amidst the devastation of a dead heaven, and working to aid the besieged mortals of Midgaard, Nott found peace. The night is her realm, and darkness her best friend. But war finds her. And her grandfather, Loki, wants her at his side, when he conquers Asgaard.

And then there’s Tyr . . .

Visions of the Night Goddess have haunted Tyr’s dreams for a millennium. Unjustly accused, she’d fled Asgaard before he could stop her. Now, circumstances offer him an opportunity to reconnect with the woman who’d walked away from the Golden Realm—the woman who’d eluded him for a thousand years, yet always haunted his dreams. But Nott’s family ties threaten to put the goddess on the other side, in a war that’s blazing across the heavens.

Pretty concise I think, but a whopping 917 characters.

Okay, let’s get it down to the raw basics. Here’s my Twitter Pitch:

Norse gods at war in the heavens. Can passion bridge the gap between darkness and light? #TwitterPitch
That’s just 102 characters including the hashtag. So tell me, how did I do?

Riding the Storm Out

If you’ve wondered in from P. J. Fiala’s wonderful blog or are starting your tour with me, get ready for a glimpse of the future, as we reveal our current works in progress.

Sing To Me

Today Raine Balkera wants to know what everyone is working on ATM. Details & conundrums, plus five bonus points for including a wee bit of your favorite scene.

You better believe I’m going for those extra points.

My current work in progress is the sequel to The Blarmling Dilemma entitled Pirates of the Dark Nebula. I’m about halfway through writing the story and it’s shaping up nicely.

Here’s the blurb:

It can’t fall into the wrong hands.

Luna Callista holds the key to a galaxy changing new technology. Captured by a ruthless band of deep-space pirates, she’s rescued by a man filled with dark secrets of his own. Who is Rik Mazar?

Galactic protector or rogue pirate?

After three years undercover among the Brotherhood of the Dark Nebula, Rik Mazar isn’t sure what side of the law he’s walking. In a world of murder and betrayal, his life goes on the line every day. But, protecting Luna Callista means putting his heart in as much danger as his hide.

A rusting service droid, a Ferang fortuneteller, and a ship full of back-water refugees are their only allies, as two hearts go into orbit to save a galaxy in peril.

Hearts in Orbit: Volume 2 – Pirates of the Dark Nebula is a science fiction romance set in the far-flung space traveling future, continuing the series’ course across a galaxy filled with love and adventure.

And here’s that snippet:

Narko’s gaze shifted to Rik. “Whadaya want me ta do, boss?”

Rik forced a smirk. “Get the old woman a coat. One of those sub-zero, radiant assault jackets. If the woman’s cold, let’s give her an oven.”

Narko chuckled and nodded his head, then his gaze fell on to Luna. “What about her?”

Only then did Rik let his real emotions show. The smile that crossed his face and the open lust he let show would certainly be misinterpreted by the pirate. “Leave her with me. Maybe I can teach her to be a bit more civil when she asks for something.”

Rik had Luna in his arms the moment the door closed behind Narko. “Is everyone alright? Are you alright?”

He didn’t wait for an answer, diving in for a kiss. The purring rumble in Luna’s throat and the passion she poured into the kiss spoke volumes. Had she missed him as much as he’d missed her?

He wanted her so badly, but still wore the dust and grime of his recent mission. Not like this. He pulled back. “I need a shower.”

“A shower?” Lust-filled joy twinkled in Luna’s eyes.

If you’ve wondered in from J. J. Devine’s wonderful blog or are starting your tour with me, hold on to your hats because today we’re going behind the scenes to discover your Romance Writers Weekly writing spaces.

This week Elizabeth Janette asks: Give us the inside scoop on your writing space. Include photos, if possible.

Ah, my writing space. It’s a tale of two cities and three offices.

This past September we moved to a new city and a new home. Before that I had a wonderful office all to myself. Birds sang and the kingdom was happy.

DCIM100MEDIA
The office I left behind.

Our new home has a large, unfinished basement, most of which I instantly adopted as my man cave and office. The king ascended his new throne, and the peasants cheered.

But as winter set in, a chill invaded the kingdom. I discovered my basement was drafty and cold. So the king packed his bags and ascended the stairway to find his winter abode, with a pledge to return when the spring does.

DCIM100MEDIA DCIM100MEDIA
The once and future office.

For the winter I’ve moved into our spare bedroom. My kingdom now has flowered curtains. But while cramped, it is closer to the refrigerator and coffee pot. The king is content…for now.

DCIM100MEDIA

The present, not so perfect office.

What does the future hold?

Some revamping of the dungeon no doubt, but there is also the possibility of that small 3rd bedroom…

Adventure awaits, and the kingdom never sleeps (at least until around 8:30PM).
